Luke Brotherton: Teaching Teachers For the Future Resource Package: Years 9-10: Post-1975 Migration to Australia
For this task I selected the Resource Package dealing with Post-Vietnam War Migration to Australia which is covered as part of the Stage 5 History Syllabus. The package is suitable for the level in which it is to be taught and provides a stimulating yet achievable learning experience. The resources and teaching strategies provided are well suited to the abilities of students at this level and provide challenges that are thought-provoking but relatively straightforward at the same time. The resources provided are easily accessible and engaging which aids in student understanding of the topic in question. This particular Resource Package instructs students to construct a wiki about the topic of Post-1975 Migration in Australia, therefore requiring students to apply ICT skills in order to complete the task. These ICT resources help to encourage collaboration between students within a visually appealing medium resulting in high levels of knowledge retention. In addition to supplying useful ICT resources the package provides methods by which to implement these strategies from a pedagogical perspective. Instructions and online tutorials are given to guide teachers who are not proficient at applying ICT technologies into their teaching. The package clearly outlines the potential that technology has to assist deeper learning and clearly demonstrates how learning experiences can be applied using new technologies. In conclusion, this particular resource package is incredibly useful for a teacher who is instructing this topic in Stage 5. It provides a range of teaching strategies to implement the provided ICT resources as well as activities to promote higher learning among students. As part of a sound pedagogical arsenal this resource package could be used to great effect.
